Resins and Varnishes for Electrical Equipment: Different Products for Different Applications

To maximize the benefits of impregnating electrical equipment, choosing the right product is crucial. There are various types of resins and varnishes for motors, transformers, electronic boards, etc., each possessing distinctive properties that make them suitable for specific applications.

The Evolution of Electro-insulating Products: New Solutions for Enhanced Operational Performance

The primary characteristic of an effective resin or varnish for motors must be to ensure electrical insulation and protection of low, medium, and high voltage equipment.

New technologies have enabled the creation of innovative electro-insulating impregnation products. These products are capable of providing high dielectric strength, strong bonding and adhesive power, thermal resistance, and resistance to humid environments or chemical agents.

The resins and varnishes used for impregnating electric motors are constantly evolving due to empirical research, ensuring increasingly high-performance solutions for customers. The implementation of electro-insulating products is generally driven by three factors:

  1. Technological evolution of electrical and electronic equipment;
  2. Environmental impact;
  3. Partnership between manufacturer and end-user.

Choosing a Specific Varnish or Resin for Electrical Equipment Depending on the Type of Unit to be Impregnated

Before identifying the most suitable resin or varnish for motors for a specific application, dialogue with the customer is fundamental. Miotti is capable of providing highly professional on-site consulting services, thanks to its qualified personnel.

Once the customer’s needs and the mechanical and electrical characteristics of their equipment are thoroughly understood, it will be possible to select a perfectly fitting resin or varnish for the specific case.

In general, impregnation products for electric motors can be categorized into six main types:

  1. Air-drying solvent-based varnishes: Primarily used for impregnating small stators and transformers or for varnishing electronic boards as external protection;
  2. Thermosetting solvent-based varnishes: Generally used for impregnating electric transformers, stators of electric motors, and rotors of low-speed electric motors;
  3. Thermosetting water-based varnishes: Ideal for impregnating stators of electric motors, pump stators, transformers, coils, and low-speed rotating parts;
  4. Single-component and two-component unsaturated polyester resins: Typically used for impregnating stators of electric motors beyond MEC 180, electric transformers over 10kVA/8kW, stators/rotors of generators up to 6KV, stators/rotors of alternators, car starters, and rotors for household appliances or for repairing motors and generators up to 10KV;
  5. Single-component thermosetting epoxy resins: Mainly used for impregnating stators of electric motors beyond MEC 180, electric transformers over 10kVA/8kW, stators and reactors in the railway sector, and stators/rotors of generators in low, medium, and high voltage;

Once the appropriate resin or varnish for motors has been identified, the most suitable impregnation method can be selected.
